BSA 1930 S 30/7 “Sloper” 493cc Side Valve BSA S 30 / 7 – 1930 - 493cc Side Valve - 5 speed – 4.93 hp ‘Sloper’ - ???? tpm. The BSA S30 series was presented in august 1926 for the 1927 season and set the BSA company on the road to market domination and succes. Briljant designer Harold Briggs was brought in from the Daimler car company and designed the machine around a sporty and reliable 493cc (80 x 98mm) longstroke sidevalve engine. The engine inclined – sloped – forward in the frame. Briggs used some typical car design features such as a dry sump lubrication and return springs within the pushrod tubes to keep the valve gear in constant touch with the cam profiles. As such resulting in an exceptionally quiet operation. The Sloper soon got a reputation as a sporting but quiet motorcycle and a real trendsetter. Apart from the OHV models several side valve Slopers were marketed, ranging from 493cc to 595 cc capacity. For 1930 a new feature was the forged steel backbone. The Sloper range was catalogued until 1935, by which time the line-up had shrunk to just two models: one overhead-valve, the other side valve, both of 595cc.
